Horsetrails’ 5th anniversary

Five years ago, three friends signed the initial agreement that was the founding act of Horsetrails. We wanted people to discover Mongolia just as we did. We started working with 3 guides, 6 families, 20 horses and very few clients. 5 years later we are now working with more than 10 families, 6 guide, 60 horses and thanks to you a lot more clients.

We are happy be able to continue, guiding you and helping you discover this country and its people that we love. We went through hard times, but thanks to everybody’s (guides, drivers, cook, families , friends) hard work, will to go on, and support (including moral support form former clients), we have been able to go on.

Nothing is perfect and nothing will ever be, but we are doing things with the will to improve, and faith in the way we chose to work.

Wolves attack

This year 4 of our horses have been attacked while they were isolated from the main herd. 3 weeks after the attack 1 horse came back scared but untouched, one fought the wolves and made it back home very badly wounded. We are taking care of its wounds now. Let’s hope it survives. Our hopes to find the two remaining horses alive are getting thiner as each day passes.

For all eternity, men and wolves have fought to keep the delicate ecological balance of mongolian environment. The balance between cattle and grass isn’t that good anymore. This small victory for the wolves should remind everybody of that balance.

Igloos in Mongolia ??

There usually isn’t enough snow to make igloos in Mongolia, but this year snow falls were quite big and it might might have been possible to build one. Instead of making one for fun, mongolian yurt (ger) are more comfortable we decided to use that extra snow to protect our horses from the wind.

Snow bricks and wall

With this additional wall layer our horses were entirely protected from northern and western wind during the night.

A godly surprise !

A little owl as settle in our horses’ camp. This bird also known as Athena’s owl, was considered in ancient Greece as a symbol of wisdom and carried by the goddess Athena (with shield and spear), as the artifact of her wisdom. Athena was famous for being goddess of war, but she was also goddess of wisdom.

Lets hope it will give us the wisdom to shelter and protect our horses through the winter. A very good sign for new year.

Mongolian new year !

This year mongolian traditional new year “Tsagaan sar”, will take place on the second of february. Horsetrails can arrange family stay at this period. A very good opportunity to share this very special time of year with a nomadic family in the middle of mongolian winter. A very unique experience.

Departure in the sun, on the snow

Even now at the beginning of Mongolian winter, some adventurous tourists left Harhorin. On snow in the sun they left by horse to discover the other face of Mongolia. In winter the air in cold and dry. The sky is blue and the light is strong on the snow. But the heart of Mongolia is still beating. Slowing. Peacefully.

In winter the men and animals are quiet. Time is flowing unexpectedly fast. The routine of life make it flow faster. Days become weeks. Weeks become month and before you realize it the long expected spring is back.

Thanks to Xavier we have pictures of our champions. They are now “fat” and all fury, to survive the winter. We all hope they will be able to compete again next year. Good luck to them the winter.

Hackers are everywhere ;)

Due to some hackers attack on our blog. It has been temporarily interrupted. The blog is back online. Until the next successful attack. That is the rule of the hide and seek game that webmeisters and hackers are playing against each other.

I hope my fix up keeps me out of trouble for a while.

Thank you for your comprehension
